WOW today I was sitting here thinking I miss my old Kenmore and wished he had not gotten so expensive to fix I called him Kenny! Don't ask me why he was a he instead of a she like we like we all call our favorite machines by female names but he was Kenny and I learned to sew on him.
That lead me thinking when I went and picked up my machine the other day at the bernina shop and there were 3 other ladies in there picking theres up and I mentioned I just call her Little Girl because I have 6 girls and have run out of girl names and they looked at me like I was crazy or naming her and I asked them if they had names for theres and they said um no never thought about it.
On the drive home I kept thinking wow not name your machine do they not love them do they not die to use them everyday, are they not there best friends and then I thought you know probably not. (Or I am just crazy)
I learned to sew out of dire need for my 4 oldest girls. I was in my early 20's layed off from work again and school was going to start and my oldest was going to kindergarten and I wanted her to look sooooo cute!
That is a whole other blog tho lol .
Any way back to my though.........These ladies can afford a new bernina every few years and they had the nicest Embroidery Machines money can buy. So I figure because they did not want for much when it comes to sewing they do not get attatched to them like I would. I guess that my dire need threw me into the passion of creating and sewing and a sewing machine attached to my hip. From then on I bought every sewing machine I could get my hands on the older the more I loved.
Then a few years later I opend a shop in town and did any kind of sewing they brought me. And then one horrible day Kenny jumped time and I took him to the shop to get worked on and they called me with a quote a few days later and it was crazy he had all kinds of parts that had to be replaced and so that dreaded day came when I had to find a new machine.
My mom who was my silent partner took me to a phaff dealer I protested the whole way saying I can not afford one of them. So we get there and I am looking around at all of these machines that say 3,000.00 to 7,000.00 and I wanted to hide in the corner thinking I do not belong here and my friend and client who I sewed most of her cloths for "because she was a quilter not a seamstress" she said, walked over to me and said I have the perfect machine for you Tracy and we walked over to this stripped down non fancy machine and I smiled it had a walking foot only a few necessary stitches and she told me it would sew 6 layers of denim. I tried her out and I fell in love right away, needless to say I walked out the door buying my first none thrift store, brand new sewing machine a Phaff freestyle limited edition and did not spend more then 600 for her. Which I still have and all my girls have learned to sew on Penny.
Now you ask if you are so penny pinching and price crazy how and why did you get a Bernina well that was totally by accident. My mom bought 3 on eBay they are artista 180e's they are old and they are by no means cheap even on eBay but once again thanks to my mom I have another best friend, I use her 16 hours a day most days and I love her and no matter how much it cost to fix Little Girl will get fixed.
Thank you Mom and Leonard for making me find my passion and teaching me what I do know and believing in me.
- So I was wondering if anyone else names there machines and if so what do you name them. Or am i the only crazy one?
- Do you die to use your machines and if so how often?
